Scholarship: Students of USA are eligible for this Boren scholarship 2015-2016.

Boren Scholarships for Undergraduate Students to Study Abroad, 2015-2016
National Security Education Program (NSEP) is funding undergraduate scholarship for US students to study in abroad except Western Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The scholarship is available in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Students must be high school graduates and must have applied to study abroad. Preference will be given to students who will study abroad for longer periods of time and highly motivated by the opportunity to work in the federal government. Online application should be submitted by February 4, 2015.

Course Level: Scholarship is available for pursuing undergraduate degree in abroad including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America and the Middle East.

Eligibility:
Boren Scholarships are for undergraduate students. You are eligible to apply for the Boren Scholarship if you are: -A U.S. citizen at the time of application -A high school graduate, or have earned a GED -Matriculated in an undergraduate degree program located within the United States accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Boren Scholars must remain matriculated in their undergraduate programs for the duration of the scholarship and may not graduate until the scholarship is complete. -Applying to a study abroad program that meets home institution standards in a country outside of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand. Boren Scholarships are not for study in the United States.

Scholarship Description:

Boren Scholarships provide up to $20,000 to U.S. undergraduate students to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded. For a complete list of countries, click here. Boren Scholars represent a variety of academic backgrounds, but all are interested in studying less commonly taught languages, including but not limited to Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian and Swahili.

Duration of award(s):
Boren Scholarships promote long term linguistic and cultural immersion and therefore study abroad proposals for two or more semesters are strongly encouraged. Preference will be given to undergraduate applicants proposing a full-year academic study. Boren-funded programs can begin no earlier than June 1. Summer-only programs must be eight (8) weeks or more and are limited to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) students.


What does it cover? Maximum award amounts for the Boren Scholarship are: $8,000 for a summer program (special initiative for STEM students only; 8 weeks minimum) $10,000 for a semester program $20,000 for a year long program

Selection criteria:
Scholarship award recipients will be selected on the basis of merit with consideration for: -Boren Awards preferences: commitment to government service, preferred countries, preferred languages, preferred fields of study and study abroad for a full academic year, -a clear explanation of the relevance of the applicant’s country, language and proposed program of study in U.S. national security, broadly defined; -academic record and potential to succeed in the proposed program; -a serious commitment to develop and/or advance foreign language competency while overseas and upon return home; -appropriateness, feasibility, and quality of the study abroad plan; and -evidence of cultural adaptability, flexibility, and maturity required to succeed abroad.
