Scottish Referendum Results & Reactions

This morning the world got the answer for a crucial question, especially for separatist movements in various parts of the globe, “Shall Scotland Regain Independence From The Crown?”

According to information provided by BBC, Scotland has voted to stay in the United Kingdom after voters decisively rejected the independence during the referendum on September 18, 2014, Thursday.
With the results processed in all 32 council areas, the “No” side won with 2,001,926 votes (55.3%) over 1,617,989 (44.7%) for “Yes”. The decision has been accepted by both sides.

All You Need To Know About Scottish Independence Referendum

The British Prime Minister, David Cameron, said in his speech this morning: “The people of Scotland have spoken. It is a clear result. They have kept our country of four nations together. Like millions of other people, I am delighted.”

The prime minister added that this referendum had been hard-fought. It had stirred strong passions. It had electrified politics in Scotland, and caught the imagination of people across the whole of United Kingdom.

Finally, he said words full of hope for the whole country: “Now we must look forward, and turn this into the moment when everyone – whichever way they voted – comes together to build that better, brighter future for our entire United Kingdom.”

2015: Why PDP Picked Jonathan As Sole Candidate

Fresh facts have emerged on why the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) decided President Goodluck Jonathan should be their sole candidate in the forthcoming 2015 presidential election.

Speaking with The Nation today, a PDP who chief who crave anonymity said with the opposition, All Progressive Congress (APC), the last thing PDP needed was a competitive primary which could lead to rancor in the party.
According to the source, the PDP stakeholders after analyzing the political situation critically were of the opinion that the already existing North-South divide in the party would aggravate if other candidates were allowed to contest against the President in a primary election.

“We are in an era of strong political opposition and we cannot afford internal rancour ahead of the 2015.

“We discovered that with the APC on board, having a competitive primary will further divide the party and place PDP on the path of losing the Presidency,” he said.

Researchers Discover Drug That Might Cure Ebola.

Barely 24 hours after a report released by the World Health Organisation, WHO, says about 4,269 people have been infected and no fewer than 2,400 others killed by the deadly Ebola Virus Disease, EVD, this year in West African countries, Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal and Sierra Leone, some good news has appeared.

This is according to an announcement made on Saturday, 13 September, 2014, by researchers at the University of Liverpool that they have made a discovery that can lead to a cure for the deadly Ebola virus.

It would be recalled that since the epidemic outbreak in the West Africa early 2014, scientists and medical experts have been trying hard to fight the deadly Ebola virus and limit it’s outspread.

But it’s a long way to announce a cure for Ebola virus till date.
Only experimental drugs are been used to treat the victims of this deadly virus though some of the drugs have shown some positive results.

However, a team from the Health Protection Research Unit at the University of Liverpool’s Institute of Infection and Global Health, said they have stumbled across an existing drug used in the treatment of severe heart disease, which could be adapted to fight the contagious Ebola virus.

According to Xinhua reports,  in collaboration with Public Health England, the team has been looking at how Ebola virus hijacks proteins inside cells, and then seeking ways to stop this from happening.

It was gathered that the experts looked at what proteins inside a cell are critical for the functions of Ebola virus and are hijacked by the virus to help with infection. One of the proteins they have targeted is known as VP24.

This protein disrupts signaling in infected human cells and disrupts the body’s immune system and the fight against the virus.

The Liverpool team then tried to find out if any existing drugs are available that could block the function of this particular protein.

And to their amazement they found the heart drug ‘ouabain’. This drug when administered can reduce the virus’ replication.

According to the team, further tests need to be done to ascertain the efficacy of the drug, but as the heart drug is already in use, much of the work to test whether it is safe for humans has already been completed.

This, they said, would potentially speed up the time it could take get the treatment to Ebola patients in need.

Nigeria Awaits Delivery Of Mi-Helicopters From Russia.

The new contract for delivery of several state-of-the-art Mi-35 and Mi-171Sh helicopters has been recently signed between the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Russian Federation.

This has been confirmed by the Deputy Director General of Rosoboron export, Sergei Goreslavsky, in a statement obtained by airrecognition.com.

The contract was signed in August this year. Unfortunately, the official did not confirm the exact number of helicopters subject to delivery. According to previous statements by Nigeria’s DHQ, the most likely quantity is 6 or 7.
He emphasized that the models are in demand on the African continent, noted that Mozambique is also among the customers. Mr Goreslavsky revealed that Mi-171Sh flying machines are in demand on global markets. They can be delivered in various configurations, with air defense, reconnaissance equipment and missile weaponry.

The helicopter can carry a cargo of 4 tons maximum, or transport up to 36 paratroopers, or carry 12 injured on stretchers.

The offered models are on service in the Russian Armed Forces since 2009.

At the same time, several experts have expressed concerns over ability of the Russian side to carry out timely delivery due to crisis in Ukraine and US/EU sanctions imposed on Moscow.

Absolute majority of engines for Russian-made helicopters were supplied from Ukraine. Due to current crisis in the relations between the two countries, such cooperation is no more possible.

The order to procure extra helicopters was given by President Jonathan himself.

Nigeria's Economy Triumphs Over Ebola.

The Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, on Thursday said the outbreak of the deadly Ebola Virus Disease EVD in West Africa did not affect Nigeria’s economy.

The minister, who made this known to Bloomberg TV Africa on Thursday, revealed that following the outbreak of the disease, the federal government had a team monitoring the impact on the economy, which she said at the moment, does not have any huge impact on the economy.

“There’s been some fall-off in hotel occupancy, in Lagos in particular, some meetings have been postponed, but you still have other business people who are arriving,” Okonjo-Iweala said.

The minister further disclosed that the country’s Excess Crude Account, where a portion of oil revenue is stored to cushion the economy against volatility, stands at $4.11 billion. She also hinted that in January, there was concern that a decline in the account balance to about $2.5 billion then, made the economy vulnerable and is expected to be restored before the end of the year

She also revealed plans to open the Development Bank of Nigeria by March next year, adding that the bank is would be capitalized with $2 billion which may rise to $10 billion with the expectation of sealing the gap in Nigerian business lending.

“It’s very difficult for business people, especially small and medium-sized enterprises, to find any money for five years, seven years,” Okonjo-Iweala said. “Mostly they can borrow for a year to three years. If you want to build a business sustainably and you want your economy to have sustained growth you’ve got to fix access to finance.”

PDP Denies Kalu’s Membership.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Southeast zone has denied the membership of former Abia State governor, Orji Uzor Kalu.

The denial was contained in a statement issued on Friday in Enugu State, by the party’s South East zone National Vice Chairman, Col. Austin Akobundu (rtd), a copy obtained by The Nation.

Akobundu, who revealed that Kalu has not been readmitted into the PDP, insisted that the rumours making the round that the ex-governor has returned to the party were false, and described it as the figment of the peddlers’ imagination.

The national vice chairman further explained that the information made available to him from both Bende local government area and Abia State chapters of the party showed that Kalu is not a member of the PDP.

“He is neither registered in his Igbere ward nor recognized as having done so in Bende local government area, let alone being accepted at the state level of the party as a returnee” Akobundu said.  “For the avoidance of doubt, Orji Uzor Kalu is not member of PDP.”

He stated that despite the fact that the ex-governor visited some friends at the national secretariat of party in Abuja, where he took photograph with some naïve national officers and former political office holders as published in two national dailies does not make him a member of the PDP.

PDP Made Ribadu A Laughing Stock - Kwankwaso

Governor Rabi’u Kwanwaso of Kano State said the former EFCC chairman, Nuhu Ribadu has been made a laughing stock by the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) who dropped him from the Adamawa gubernatorial race.
The governor stated this yesterday, September 10, at the Government House in Kano while receiving merit awards from two NGOs namely, APC Kwankwasiyya Amana, Bauchi state chapter and Nigeria 774 Kwankwasiyya Merger: Kwankwaso for President, Leadership reports.

Ribadu who recently defected from the APC and seven other governorship aspirants stepped down last week from the race for the gubernatorial ticket, under the platform of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP).
Kwankwaso said: “After he left the APC for the PDP, his new party did not find him worthy of its gubernatorial ticket. I am sure the PDP stakeholders in Adamawa are now laughing at him. We sympathise with him”.

According to him, the Adamawa state PDP chose a candidate whom most of their supporters see as incompetent, while pointing out that APC had come up with a credible candidate in person of Senator Muhammad Jibrila Bindaw who can rule the state.

He therefore appealed to the people to think wisely in the forthcoming gubernatorial election in the state, dump the PDP which caused hardship within the 5-years they’ve been in power and vote for the APC which is ready to bring about positive and realistic changes in the whole country.

The Adamawa governorship election is about a month away and the political parties are gearing up for the competition.

Reported by great Researchers: Ebola May Hit 15 More Countries.

A new research has revealed that the deadliest Ebola outbreak in the history of mankind could spread to no fewer than 15 countries in West and Central Africa.

The research, carried out by the University of Oxford, also stated that up to 70 million people would be at risk of infection.

It was gathered that the study compared historic outbreaks to the virus’ possible transmission in bats and chimpanzees to predict how the disease could spread through its vast animal reservoir.
According to reports, it is the first time scientists have attempted to explain how the virus, which is contracted through contact with infected bodily fluids, has traveled westward across Africa.

The resulting map shows how the populations of the Central African Republic, Cameroon, Ghana and a dozen more countries could be hit by the outbreak, which has already killed nearly 2,300 people in 2014, according to latest estimates released on Tuesday, 9 September, 2014 by the World Health Organization, WHO.

Earlier studies on the Ebola Virus Disease, EVD, have revealed that several species of bat are suspected of carrying the virus through the jungles of West and Central Africa without showing symptoms, passing the disease onto other animals which are eaten by some communities as “bush meat”.

Researchers said transmission to the human population was not “inevitable”, but that environmental factors in many more countries than previously considered made it possible for further Ebola outbreak outbreaks.
According to the latest research conducted by the University of Oxford, Cote D’Ivoire, Gabon, Angola, Tanzania, Togo, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Burundi, Equatorial Guinea, Madagascar and Malawi could also join those countries already affected.

We Will Implement The Creation Of More States – David Mark.

Nigeria’s Senate President, David Mark had yesterday declared that the Senate will instill the creation of additional states after it was brought forth by the recently ended national conference.
In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Paul Mumeh in the federal state capital, Abuja.

It read that the idea for the creation of more state’s matched the President’s idea was due to the mass populace desire to end the imbalances created by the current system.

He said this new creation will give Nigerians a more instilled sense of belonging.

It read: “Even if it takes my last breadth, I want to pursue the creation of state. I will put in my last breadth to ensure the creation of Apa State for my people” .

Mark revealed that the Senate has already advocated for the creation of more states, but some members have opposed with the notion that the existing ones can barely be maintained.

The 2015 National conference had proposed the idea for the creation of additional 18 states to increase the number of states in Nigeria from 36 to 54.

APC Accuse PDP, Zagbayi Nuhu Of Purchasing Votes.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has rejected the result of Niger East Senatorial bye-election, accused their opponents from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in unfair practices.

This message was delivered by party’s spokesperson in the state, Jonathan Vatsa, who declared that the result announced by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was unacceptable to the party, Punch reports.

“In some instances, people’s votes were purchased for N30,000 each. District, village and ward heads were intimidated and ordered to ensure victory for the PDP at their places of influence or have their appointments terminated,” Vasta declared.

The APC noted that top government officials in Hilux trucks were stationed at polling units and openly induced voters with cash and fabrics.

However, the Returning Officer for the election, Prof Wole Moreniekeje, did not confirm such allegations, said that Zagbayi of the PDP have certified the requirements of the law and scored the highest number of votes and was declared an undisputed winner.

Governor of Niger State, Babagida Aliyu, is also sure that the result was fair. In his reaction, he dedicated the victory of the PDP to the people of the state. He said that Zagbayi’s victory was a reflection of the confidence the people have in the party.

The main opposition force of Nigeria wondered what moral right Governor Aliyu had to say that the victory for PDP was a reflection of the confidence the people have in the party, when he knew that the conduct of the election contravened the Electoral Act.

Ebola Spread By Taxi Passengers

In spite of global effort to wage war against the outbreak of the Ebola Virus Disease, EVD, the World Health Organisation, WHO, has warned that the Ebola virus is spreading exponentially in Liberia.

The United Nations agency said that motorbike-taxis and regular taxis are “a hot source of potential virus transmission” because they are not disinfected in Liberia, where conventional Ebola control measures “are not having an adequate impact”.

It added that aid partners needed to scale up efforts against Ebola by three- to fourfold in Liberia and elsewhere in West African countries battling the epidemic.
According to WHO statistics released on Friday 5 September, the Ebola virus has killed 1,089 people among 1,871 cases in Liberia, the highest among the five West African countries affected by the current outbreak, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Senegal and Liberia.

The report stated that in Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone, 2,097 have died out of 3,944 cases. Another 18 cases and seven deaths have been recorded in Nigeria and one non-fatal case in Senegal.

BOKO HARAM: What Herbalists Have Threatened To Do.

Following the allegations made by Australian Negotiator, Stephen Davis that former governor of Borno State, Ali Modu Sheriff and Ex Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika are Boko Haram sponsors, the Council of Babalawos in Northern Nigeria has urged security agencies in the country to investigate them.
The Council of Babalawos who gave a 40 ultimatum said if Modu Sheriff and Gen Ihejirika are not investigated they  would be forced to sue the men for allegedly financing terrorism.

In a statement made available to Punch and signed by its chairman, Mr. Fabunmi Aiyesoro and vice chairman, Mr. Ogunwale Ogunshola, the Council lamented the death of 48 of its members in the hand of the Boko Haram since 2011.

Nigerian Bar Association enlighten FG to Fight Boko Haram

Nigerian lawyers in Borno state, northeast Nigeria, under the umbrella, Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, the Maiduguri chapter, has urged the Federal Government to adopt some of its strategies against the Ebola Virus Disease, EVD, in fighting Boko Haram.

The Chairman of the group, Malam Abdulwasiu Alfa, made this statement in Maiduguri on Monday, 8 September, 2014, while speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN.

Alfa stated that the tactics and vigour the FG is currently using to fight the Ebola virus if directed towards the Boko Haram insurgents would go a long way in ending insurgency in the country.
“We commend the Federal Government for gallantly curbing the spread of the Ebola virus. We urge the government to do so toward ending the Boko Haram reign of terror in the country,” he said.
Alfa said that if government had adopted the same strategy in fighting the insurgency the problem would have been solved long ago.

Chibok Girls: Pst Tunde Bakare Defends.

Pastor Tunde Bakare of Latter Rain Assembly and Convener of Save Nigeria Group (SNG) has come under criticism for his recent photo which surfaced online in which he was smiling wholeheartedly while holding a banner asking the Government to rescue the abducted girls.

The banner had the inscription, ‘Rescue Our Girls Now’, a campaign by the Women Arise movement, led by prominent Nigerian female activist, Joe Okei-Odumakin.

A lot of people were bothered why he had to smile over worrisome issue of terrorism in the photograph.
Speaking to Sahara Reporters on why he smiled, he said it is because he knows God is bigger than Boko Haram and the Federal Government of Nigeria as a whole.

How JTF Recruits Children To Fight Boko Haram.

As the Federal Government continues its war against terrorism in Nigeria, a new report, “Watchlist on Children and Armed Conflict”, has accused the Civilian Joint Task Force, JTF and the Boko Haram sect of using children to fight each other.

According to the report published in New York, United States at the weekend, “Children as young as 13 are being recruited by both sides of the conflict and have nowhere to turn”.

The report added that the Islamist sect has subjected boys and girls to forced recruitment, detention, attacks at school, abductions, rape, and other forms of sexual violence.

The 64-page report stated that the gravity and scale of violations perpetrated by both the Civilian JTF and the Boko Haram warrant urgent action from the Federal Government, the United Nations, and other child protection actors.

The report titled “Who Will Care for Us?”  reveals grave violations by some parties to the conflict since December 2012 and recommends how to protect Nigerian children.

“While the abduction of over 200 girls in Chibok, Borno State, has shed some light on how children are affected by the conflict in the northeast, most abuses are still poorly documented, understood, and addressed by key actors,” Janine Morna, Researcher at Watchlist on Children and Armed Conflict, stated in the report.

The report added that security forces who encounter child soldiers in Boko Haram’s ranks often detain these children in unofficial military detention facilities known for the mistreatment of detainees, instead of protecting and rehabilitating them, in accordance with international standards.

“The government of Nigeria should denounce the recruitment of children by all armed groups, take immediate steps to release child soldiers in their custody, and develop procedures to transfer child soldiers to civilian actors,” said Morna.

According to a media survey conducted by Watchlist,  attacks on schools in northern region has resulted in the death, injury, or abduction of at least 414 students, teachers, or other civilians on school premises between January 2012 and July 2014.
Morna stated that : “Continuous attacks on schools have devastated education in the region, creating a climate of fear for students and teachers, and leading to school closures from as early as April 2013. Relevant actors must bolster school security through programmes like the Safe Schools Initiative.”
Some of the documented abductions of boys and girls by Boko Haram, according to Watchlist, included Christian girls who were forced to convert to Islam and coerced into marrying members of the group, along with other female abducts.

It was disclosed by a senior official, who pleaded anonymity while speaking with Reuters yesterday. According to him, air strikes have been carried out “on all the Boko Haram bases”, which he said reflected President Goodluck Jonathan’s order for a “fully-fledged war” against insurgents operating in the North-East.

Within a short period of time Boko Haram captured several strategic towns, including Gwoza, Bama and several others. Inspired by their success, the militants are believed to move further in an attempt to seize Maiduguri. It would be noted that after capturing Gwoza Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau claimed Islamic Caliphate in the area. Now the terrorists’ aim is apparently to expand the caliphate.

On situation in Bama, Vanguard also reports referring to Reuters interview with Musa Sumail, a human rights activist in Maiduguri who said:

Reality: Another American Doctor Tests Positive To Ebola.

The Christian missionary group ‘SIM’ on Tuesday announced that another American health worker attending Ebola patients in West Africa has tested positive to the virus.

According to AFP, this was made known by the group’s president, Bruce Johnson, who declined to give the name of the doctor.

He said the victim has been working in obstetrics at the SIM-funded ELWA hospital in the Liberian capital Monrovia.

However, the group said the new victim has not been working directly with Ebola patients, and wondered how he might have gotten himself infected. The doctor is said to have been isolated in the hospital dedicated to Ebola cases.

“My heart was deeply saddened, but my faith was not shaken, when I learned another of our missionary doctors contracted Ebola,” Johnson said. “We have gifted Liberian doctors, medical staff and support staff who are carrying on the fight.”

It would be recalled that two Americans who also worked at ELWA, Doctor Kent Brantly and nurse Nancy Writebol, were reported to have contracted the virus but were flown to the states from Liberia were they were successfully treated.

Narrattion by the US "President Obama" on Ebola Virus Disease : Stopping Ebola Won't Be Easy

US President Barack Obama has said stopping the deadly Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) won’t be easy but it can be achieved.

In a video, which appeared on the White House website and was aimed especially West African countries struggling in their fight to stop the outbreak of the Ebola virus, particularly residents of Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Nigeria, Obama took out time to explain facts of the Ebola outbreak.

The president said: “Stopping this disease won’t be easy. But we know how to do it.

“You are not alone, together we can treat those who are sick with respect and dignity.

“We can save lives and our countries can work together to improve public health so this kind of outbreak doesn’t happen again.”

Obama warned Africans not to touch the dead bodies of people infected with Ebola, referring to the widely practiced tradition of touching and kissing the body before burial, as the virus is passed through bodily fluids of an infected person.

“You can respect your traditions and honor your loved ones without risking the lives of the living,” Obama said.

APGA Aspirant Trades Words With Governor Orji.

Governor Theodore Orji of Abia State and a governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Grand Alliance in the state, Chief Chikwe Udensi have engaged in a war of words over the 2015 general elections.

According to a report published by Punch online on 2 September, 2014, Udensi had in a recent media chat accused Orji of non-performance, adding that infrastructures have totally collapsed in Abia under the governor’s watch.

The APGA governorship aspirant also alleged that there was nothing to justify the huge resources accruing to the state from the federation accounts, promising that if given the opportunity he would salvage the state from “misrule and transform its collapsing economy.”

“There are no roads in Aba, and education has failed; the masses are suffering because of bad leadership,” he said.

While reacting to Udensi’s allegations, the Chief Press Secretary of Governor Orji, Charles Ajunwa, described Udensi’s comments as “malicious and the ranting of a political neophyte seeking relevance.”

According to the release signed byAjunwa, it stated that Governor Orji was so committed to delivering “on his covenant with Abians and transformation agenda that he would not be distracted by the antics of detractors like Udensi and his cohorts.”

The release reads in part: “The attention of Abia State Government has been drawn to the ranting of a political lilliput who thinks the only way to achieve popularity is to attack the government in power.

“Political jobbers like Udensi should be reminded that governorship of Abia State is not for opportunists but for men with vision and character.”

Orji also described Udensi as “clueless” for his critical stance on the Governor’s airport project which he said amounted to a misplaced priority.

How Ebola-Infected Patients Are Cured.

Dr.Bruce Ribner, who is the  Medical Director of Specialised Infectious Disease unit at the Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, has revealed that patients who recover from Ebola virus infection will generally develop a high immunity to the virus.

It was reported that Ribner was the leader of the team that took care of  the  two American aid workers, Kent Brantly and Nancy Writebol, who were released after being pronounced “recovered” from Ebola contracted Ebola while working in west Africa, hence, the validity of this report.

Still Linking: How Elderly Woman Contracted Ebola In Port-Harcourt

Ribner made it known that Ebola survivors are totally immuned against the deadly disease by developing antibodies that helps fight the virus. The Medical Doctor said:  “In general, the finding is it’s basically like being immunised-it would be unusual to get infection with the same strain. We are still evaluating that in our two patients”.
Ribner made it known that although his claims are exact, there are two outpatients who are on evaluation to drive home the point.  “They have agreed to undergo additional testing so we can better understand immunity to Ebola virus. We are meeting with them periodically”, he explained.

“What we found in general is that among our Ebola patients, because of the amount of fluid they lost through diarrhoea and vomiting, they had a lot of electrolyte abnormalities. And so replacing that with standard fluids without monitoring will not do a very good job of replacing things like sodium and potassium. In both of our patients we found those levels to be very low.

Ebola: 39 Arrested Foreigners Released

ThisDay reports that the Commissioner for Health and Head of the Ebola Virus Task Force, Ayebatonye Owei, has refuted the claims, describing it as the work of rumour mongers.

He said there was no iota of truth in the speculation, and assured members of the public that government had made adequate preparation to contain any outbreak of the disease in the state.

Owei further explained that the government has no reason to hide such information from the people as any outbreak of the dreaded disease is capable of spreading to all irrespective of status.

While assuring residents in the state who had been gripped by panic since last week, Owei categorically stated that there is no case of Ebola in Bayelsa State and described the speculations as purely false.

Liberian Health Workers Protest Over Ebola.

The outbreak of the Ebola virus in West Africa got to another height on Monday, 1 September, 2014 when nurses at Liberia’s largest hospital went on strike over the deadly disease.

According to a report published by the AFP, the health workers were demanding better pay and equipment to protect them against the Ebola epidemic which has killed hundreds in the west African nation.

Speaking on their demands, John Tugbeh, spokesperson for the strikers at Monrovia’s John F Kennedy hospital, said the nurses would not return to work until they are supplied with “personal protective equipment (PPEs)”, the hazmat-style suits which guard against infectious diseases.

“From the beginning of the Ebola outbreak we have not had any protective equipment to work with. As result, so many doctors got infected by the virus. We have to stay home until we get the PPEs,” he said.

The Ebola virus, transmitted through contact with infected bodily fluids, has killed more than 1 550 people in four countries since the start of the year – almost 700 of them in Liberia, according to a recent report published by the World Health Organisation, WHO.
A high proportion of the deaths – almost a tenth – have been among health workers and the WHO has warned that the outbreak is set to get a lot worse, predicting up to 20 000 cases before it is brought under control.

It was gathered that the surgical section at JFK is the only trauma referral centre in Liberia and a long-term dispute would severely damage the country’s capability to respond to the Ebola crisis.

It would be recalled that the hospital closed temporarily in July over the infections and deaths of an unspecified number of health workers who had been treating Ebola patients.

“We need proper equipment to work with [and] we need better pay because we are going to risk our lives,” Tueh said.

As at the time of compiling this report, management of the hospital has not make a statement over the crisis, hence it is not clear how large the striking group was, or what contingency plans were in place at the hospital.

Meanwhile, in a statement released earlier on Monday, Liberia’s President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf ordered most civil servants in the country to stay at home for another month in an effort to stop the spread of the deadly Ebola virus.
